Endlings – a Story Creature workshop

floof

The word ‘Endling’ was coined to describe the last named survivor of a family, but has now come to mean the last survivor of a species. Usually with a name, such as Martha, the last passenger Pigeon; Benjamin, the last Thylacine; and Lonesome George, the last Pinta Island Tortoise. Sadly, the world we live in now is likely to be full of endlings. So, to give space for play and happier thoughts, this creative workshop is set to allow you to dive into the personal stories of endlings by making your very own, and allowing its story to be heard, before taking it home for snuggles and reassurances that even though it is the only one of its kind in existence, it will never be wanting for a friend.

endling

This workshop will teach you ways of (I would say ‘how to’, but that implies there is only one right way) making amazing creatures out of socks and gloves – themselves often lost, lonely endlings in their own right – and seriously, no advance knowledge of sewing or creating is required! All materials, teaching, and hot beverages supplied. Come along and create your own creature: tell us its name, and its story, and how it came to be an endling.

Workshop is approx 2.5 hours to include time for people to share their endling stories, and suitable for age 14+ (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult).  Tea and bikkits will be provided, and there is also a lovely cafe nextdoor if you want to get lunch. Tickets available below. Concessionary rate of £15 available to those in receipt of benefits or on a very low income, just apply the code “Martha” at the checkout 🙂

Christmas Hearts workshop

heartsrednwhite

Come all ye craftful, and escape the consumer chaos by spending a relaxing afternoon making beautiful Christmas heart decorations. I will show you how to make simple motif hearts, with whatever message you like on them, as well as traditional Scandinavian woven hearts (which are actually little pockets, so you can hang them on the tree with a chocolate coin or treasure inside). They look complicated, but they’re really not. Step away from the madding crowds, slow down, and let your creative self play.

joy_heart

Make them for gifts, make them just for yourself, make as many as you want. A perfect antidote to rushing around buying mass-produced gubbins, you will come away from this workshop with your festive soul healed.

Seasonal refreshments and scintillating conversation provided as standard, and there is also a lovely cafe downstairs if you want to get lunch. Tickets available below. Concessionary rate of £17 available to those in receipt of benefits or on a very low income, just apply the code “Dodo” at the checkout 🙂

Introduction to Craftivism, and Guerilla Craft Drop

YouAreEnough

I’m afraid I have to cancel this event due to an unexpected (aren’t kids great at this?) school information morning. As people have sent stitchings, I will be doing a sneaky craft drop anyway, and pictures will be shared on my Facebook page and Instagram feed (@disobedientchild). Another craftivism event will be arranged in the new year, but don’t let this stop you scattering kindness and love like healing confetti wherever you are able. x

——-

A day of craft and activism! I will talk to you about what craftivism means to me, how others interpret it, and what it might mean to you. In this workshop we will be participating in the You Are So Very Beautiful project (#YASVB), so I will show you how to make small stitched affirmations, in whatever style you wish. Then, and this is the fun bit (those of us less mobile are completely free to opt out or work around this), we will go out and around the city centre, leaving these affirmations for other people to find and enjoy. And then we’ll all meet up again and drink tea and eat cake and have a discussion about how it went 🙂
More simply: Learn, make, distribute, eat cake.

No sewing skills necessary, no interaction with random-strangers-on-the-street required, this is a totally fun and no pressure workshop 🙂

Starts at 11am, probably winding up at about 3ish, but I’m happy to stay later if people want to make/chat more. If you’ can’t make that date, take a look here for how you can still get involved: http://pickymiss.com/2016/09/21/beautiful/

I find big paper a great medium for collecting ideas, and when I put out a table-length of lining paper at my ‘Open Studio’ event and asked “What can we do, now, to make this world a better place?”, I got some *really* good ones 🙂 Plant trees, and hug them! Play music, laugh, take a deep breath,

Elephants at the Edge

pink elephant

It’s funny when I hear people talking about how ‘storytelling is dead’, or maybe, ‘storytelling is “the dawn of a new creative movement”, when in fact, it’s as old as humanity, and has never gone out of fashion. This summer saw the 24th storytelling Festival at the Edge, in Much Wenlock, Shropshire, and I was invited to take along my crafting skills and weave some crafty-story magic.

I know, sounds amazing right? It’s just
